India airlifted a high-powered drilling machine to assist in the rescue of dozens of road workers trapped underground. “The vertical drilling will disturb the rock formation and will cause vibrations to the mountain,” said Sundriyal, who is considered an expert in local rock formations. “However, it is difficult to say which one of the two methods would help us reach the trapped workers first,” he told reporters Monday. But for most of the families of the trapped men, the wait has been an agonizing switch between hope and despair. One of the trapped workers can be seen on camera.

CNN —Rescuers in India drilled past the halfway mark on Wednesday in efforts to reach workers trapped in a partially collapsed tunnel in the Himalayas. Forty-one labourers became trapped in India’s northern Uttarakhand state after part of the passageway to the tunnel’s entrance gave way on November 12, sparking a frantic rescue mission. Twelve boys and their soccer coach were rescued after nearly three weeks trapped inside the flooded Tham Luang cave by a specialist cave diving team in 2018. Indian authorities have also reached out to the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) to get advice, the statement said.

As many as 40 men were working in the tunnel, part of an ambitious Himalayan highway project in town of Uttarkashi, when part of the passageway leading to the entrance gave way, authorities said. “We are all working hard to get them all out,” Uttarkashi superintendent of police, Arpan Yaduvanshi, told CNN on Monday. Rescuers have been supplying oxygen and water to the men through the debris, Yaduvanshi added. The Char Dham Highway project is expected to be nearly 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) long, improving access to the state from India’s capital New Delhi. In August, more than a dozen workers were killed after a bridge under construction collapsed in the northeastern state of Mizoram.
